The Yarn Room - part three
The Yarn Rooms are part of the Goodacre carpet factory in Kendal, Cumbria. Goodacres is a famous name in Kendal, who have been producing wool carpets in the town for over 100 years. They are still going strong in the town, but these original buildings are no longer used by the company and have fallen into disrepair over the years. Fortunately, a collaboration between the building's owners and a local design agency have plans to restore some of the rooms to allow local artists to work from there. I asked to photograph the building before restoration, and, although much of the original equipment and machinery have been removed, you still get a feel for the busy industrial process that once filled the air. There are lots of details still present which you find as you spend a little time there. The building's structure, textured crumbling surfaces and the few remaining features produce some evocative images, with a real connection to traditional industry.
